Happy New Year! - Some Market Photos

And here we are on the last day of 2012. Quite momentous, really.

Before I get too carried away, I would like to send each and every one of you my warmest wishes for a happy, healthy and fruitful 2013. Thank you so much for your loyal support, for commenting and for reading my blog - it means a lot :))

all that citrus fruit is such an uplifting sight, don't you think?

Now, back to this morning: it dawned bright and clear, just that kind of morning to make you want to leap up and get going which is exactly what I did: I grabbed my camera and headed off to my local market. This time I didn't take the car as I really didn't feel like buying after all that Christmas excess -I just wanted to be out there sharing the experience with everybody else.

Here are the photos I took:

approaching the market from the foot bridge
it's still pomegranate time here
the hugest cabbages you will ever see
pickles for everybody
beautiful baby beetroot - 'new crop'/yeni mahsul
this guy insisted on holding up his container of fresh 'organic' milk for this photo!
seç al means choose and buy!
you can even buy fish at the market: here, hamsi  or anchovies, and istavrit
literally, 'blood carrots'. I think they make şalgam from these

the display's great, isn't it?

For pictures of the amazing olives on display today, go to my facebook page: A Seasonal Cook in Turkey (just type it in the box at the top of your own page) and you will see them there! If you like them, you can click Like if you like!

A Very Happy New Year to you all from me in Istanbul!

  1. Claudia, Happy New Year to you. Thanks for sharing your pictures, stories and recipes this past year. I look forward to more next year. I love walking through and shopping at the outdoor markets and I am sure that doing that in Turkey would be a very unique experience.

  3. Claudia, Sandra and senior dogs had such a lovely New Year's brunch talking about your blog, how much we love it, and the recipes we've tried. We scrolled through them all and we pointed out our favorites - Hunkar Beğendi, patlacan fritters, carrot soup and all of the fish recipes. Thanks for your wonderful blog and we are looking forward to another wonderful year of recipes.
